Who gets heart attacks? Heart attacks are the number one killer for both men and women in Westernised countries like the UK. Nearly 30% of all deaths are due to coronary artery disease. Coronary arteries supply heart muscle and they narrow due to cholesterol deposits in the vessel wall. This is the underlying cause of a heart attack.

Mediterranean diets High rates of heart attacks are a reflection of life style, particually diet. Countries like Japan and the southern European Mediterranean countries like Greece and Italy, eat diets low in saturated (animal) fats, have low blood cholesterol levels and experience a low rate of heart attacks. You can reduce your risk! Individuals at high risk from a heart attack can be recognised by the presence of so-called coronary risk factors. Risk factors that are unalterable are increasing age, family history, genetic factors and nationality. Risk factors that are alterable are smoking, high blood pressure, high heart rates, high blood cholesterol levels, dietary factors (high saturated fats, low fibre/bulk, alcohol abuse), obesity, diabetes, physical inactivity, stress, the menopause and combinations (clustering) of these various risk factors. What are heart attacks and angina? Angina is a sympton comprising chest discomfort arising from the heart, ususally associated with stress or exercise, it is a "squeezing" sensation in the central chest region, often spreading to the shoulders (particually the left), arms and throat and occassionally to the jaw, abdomen and back. The discomfort goes within a few minutes of stopping exercise. Pain from a heart attack is similar to angina but occurs spontaneously and lasts for at least 30 minutes.
